My Merry Men

I finally put some pics up on flickr from my epic trip to Medieval Times for my 29th birthday. Our knight was slain first but we tried to not let that bring us down. If you like Knights, Souvenirs, and New Jersey, I highly recommend going.

On tuesday night, I went to my first opera. I saw Philip Glass’s “Satyagraha” at the Met. The whole experience was pretty awesome. The show had gigantic puppets manipulated by people on stilts. Which reminds me, I need stilts. The times has a video piece about it here (jerks don’t let you embed) and there are some tracks from it posted here.

OLIVER!!!!!!

April 16th, 2008 · No Comments

What would you get if legendary british actor David Niven had sex with a monkey? You would get an adorable humanzee named Oliver. This doc (brought to me by dolder) is six parts of crazy. It has attempted humanzee to human rape, a gay pianist, LIGERS!, stunning ethical questions, and uh… Micky Dolenz.

PART 2, PART 3, PART 4, PART 5, PART 6

Our Sweet Rig

So I’ve been back for a while and have been preoccupied so I haven’t posted about the rest of my cross-country adventure. The truth is, not much happened. We drove, got gas, drove more and then got a hotel. We spent 3 days listening to the audiobook of “The Road” which could be the most depressing books ever, especially when driving on a “road.” When we got into Oklahoma we saw a billboard for Toby Keith’s “I Love This Bar and Grill” and we knew, gigantic truck and trailer or not, we were stopping in downtown Oklahoma City.

 Toby Keith's

For obvious reasons, Toby Keith’s “I love this Bar and Grill” is protected by a moat. Everyone knows terrorists can’t swim. Inside, Toby Keith’s “I love this Bar and Grill” is a feast for the eyes and ears.

 Patriotism, Personified

Hey Blue States! Are you ready for something this american!? I assure you, you are not. The Menu features Freedom Fries (eat it Sarkozy!) and there is a special meal for soldiers. It’s a burger, fries (freedom), and a soft drink, the cost is free (one-time only). You know how those mooching soldiers can be. And then when we got to poughkeepsie we realized this happened:

  this happened

I have more pictures from the road and nick’s wedding here.Once I get all my pictures together, I’ll post about my epic birthday celebration. Just know that falconry was involved.

Standin’ on a corner in Winslow, Arizona

March 25th, 2008 · No Comments

Actually just leaving there now. There are many moments when a person begins to feel like a grown-up. That happened to me yesterday when instead of cursing the asshole in a uhaul truck, I became the asshole driving a uhaul truck. Its a little unwieldy but otherwise a reasonably comfortable ride. The added bonus is we have to stop at weigh stations! If only we had a CB radio. The goal now is to take a chunk out of Texas.

don’t worry about the government

March 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

I’m on the plane heading to LA now, slowly recovering from Nick’s wedding. I woke up early friday morning and went to the albany city hall. Nick and Masha and his family and friends came as well. There was probably 15 of us in total. They filled out some paperwork and then we all went into the courtroom, the judge came out, and then they were married. When I got in the car to leave, I noticed the time, 9:15. I said to Dennis, “I usually wake up around now.”

Amongst all those wedding magazines newstands have, they should have one devoted to Dream weddings for men. For this truly was one. Articles could be “Finding that Perfect Courthouse!”, “The 40 dollar fee: cash or check? We weigh the options”, and “Circle Around Again!: 10 tips for finding cheap municipal parking”.

Next up for me is picking up that moving van.

On Vacation and On a Train

March 20th, 2008 · 2 Comments

As we speak, my epic adventure has begun. I’m on amtrack heading for my state’s capitol, Albany. Where apparently the men legislate and the women stand next to podiums waiting for the inevitable.

My first leg will take me to the courthouse tomorrow to watch my good friend Nick marry his love true in front of his family, a justice of the peace, and any other scofflaw that happens to be paying a ticket nearby.

From there I am flying to LA to help my other good friend, dolder, move to New York. We’ll be driving a uhaul with a car carrier which I think will make our top speed around 35 mph. But during that time I hope to update you, the reader, to my whereabouts. I’ll be able to do that through my fancy phone but I won’t be able to add pictures. Which I find to be a limitation and a blessing. Instead of simple pictures, I will take you there through my descriptive prose.

For example;
I ride beside the mighty hudson river on this first day of spring. My train, a cocoon, for when I entered I was larvae but NAY! When I exit, I will be a moth or something, ready to see the world through new gooier eyes. As I look out my window at this bewitching hour, I can see… well… nothing, it’s really dark out.

So get your awards and your tissues ready suckers!!!!

My co-worker Ben and his friend made this animation for boingboing.net. It is fantastic.

It is based off their original holiday themed cartoon which is equally fantastic.

hulu is go

March 13th, 2008 · 1 Comment

so the long talked about hulu is up and its actually pretty great. I had misgivings about it since NBC stopped selling their programs on itunes and touted this site as the alternative. You can’t put shows on your ipod and its all in flash video (a pet peeve that I will address in a later post) but it has a whole lot of content to watch when you should be doing something important with your life. Its actually the first instance I can think of of a copyright holder coming up with a reasonable alternative to a grey market site (youtube etc.)

The only thing I don’t understand is the concept of the “minisode”. Who watches these? Here’s a minisode of one of my favorite newsradio episodes, “The Cane”:

Did you notice anything? First, they kept the plotline and cut out all the jokes. Second, THERE IS NO CANE. Why NBC, why?
